WHAT IT MEANS
Potholes that return after every grading are a drainage symptom, not a surface problem. Water is collecting in low spots and softening the base underneath. Blading them smooth without fixing the water only resets the clock.

WHAT IT MEANS
Washouts mean concentrated water is using your driveway as a channel. On mountain grades, a blocked culvert, a filled ditch, or a lost cross-slope can send an entire hillside of runoff straight down the drive.

WHAT IT MEANS
Washboarding forms when loose surface material sits on a hard or poorly bonded base, then gets rippled by traffic. It usually points to worn-out surface gravel, insufficient fines, or inadequate compaction.

We scarify the surface rather than blading over it, restore proper material where the gravel has degraded, reshape the crown, and finish with vibratory compaction so the surface bonds instead of rippling again.

Soft spots mean water is trapped in or under the driveway. Poor drainage, clay-heavy subgrade common around Hesperus and the dry side of the county, or a thin base can all hold water where traffic then churns it to mud.

Can a badly damaged gravel driveway be repaired, or does it need rebuilding?
Most damaged gravel driveways in the Durango area can be repaired without full reconstruction. If the base is largely intact, restoring the crown, correcting drainage, and rebuilding the worn sections brings the driveway back at a fraction of the cost of starting over. Full reconstruction only makes sense when the base has failed across most of the drive. We tell you which situation you have during the on-site evaluation, before any work is quoted.
Why does my driveway keep failing every spring in La Plata County?
Spring failures come from snowmelt. Southwest Colorado driveways absorb months of freeze-thaw cycling, then take concentrated meltwater in a few short weeks. If the crown is worn, ditches are blocked, or culverts are undersized, that water runs down the driving surface and takes the driveway with it. Repairing the surface without correcting the melt path means repeating the repair every year.
Will regrading alone fix my ruts and potholes?
Only if drainage is the one thing wrong, which is rare. Regrading restores the shape that sheds water, and for a driveway with a solid base and a minor crown problem, that can be the whole fix. If the base is soft, a culvert is blocked, or runoff is entering from the hillside, grading alone gives you a smooth driveway that fails again after the next storm. How often should a gravel driveway be regraded in Southwest Colorado?
Plan on attention after spring melt. Driveways with proper crown, drainage, and base typically need only light maintenance grading each year or two. Steep grades, heavy traffic, and driveways with unresolved drainage problems need it more often.
